Verify any e-mail address - OR NOT

I have always been a little suspicious of websites that ask for, what I consider to be, personal information. I came across a website today - verify-email.org - which describes itself as "a tool that allows you to verify e-mail addresses. You type in the address, and the tool will connect to the mail server and check that the mailbox and username exist." I am sure that spammers have plenty of addresses to work with, but what a great tool this could be for topping up the numbers.

I have no evidence to indicate that this is not a legitimate tool.
But....

Yes, I have used it to verify an email address.
A virgin address - let's hope it stays that way.
