Quack Hackers

Hoax hacks. Rigged demos of make-believe security holes. Those, it appears, are the real big news that came out of the Black Hat USA security conference earlier this month. Two of the headline-grabbingest claims by independent security researchers at the show have since turned out to be bogus.

One, a reportedly easy-to-exploit security problem in a Cisco firewall appliance, isn't reproducible. The other, an allegedly even-easier-to-exploit hole in Apple's Wi-Fi drivers, didn't actually involve attacking Apple's products after all.

So much for one of IT's last great myths: the honest hacker.

Trusted computing a shield against worst attacks?

Trusted computing proponents may have found their best argument yet for incorporating specialized security hardware into every computer system.

Device authentication would not have stopped all crimes. For example, there were a number of cases were the individual had valid credentials and was on a company machine but overstepped their authorization. Bill Bosen, founding partner, Trusted Strategies A report published this week by computer firmware developer Phoenix Technologies concluded that the risks posed by the most damaging digital attacks could be eliminated if companies adopted technology to identify users' computers on the network.
